Take a hike

Everyone pack a sack lunch, we’re going on a field trip!

There’s a nature center not too far from us where you can take a 1 mile loop trail through a canyon that looks like the Earth’s teeth after millions of years of neglect. It’s a pretty easy downhill hike for most of the trail. The last part is a switchback that goes roughly 400 feet straight up.

Punkster and I have been there several times to hike the trail and check out the animals at the nature center.

A couple of weeks ago he said he wanted to go back and take the side trail to a rock formation we’ll call “The Hat”. It was a beautiful day for a hike so we filled the backpack with raisins, bananas, and gourmet beef jerky, filled the water jug and headed out.

So we check out the critters at the center, pick up a map and hit the trail head. It turns out the “hat” is four and a half miles up the trail. I mentioned this to the Punkster but he is not phased. “That’s nine miles round trip,” I remind him. “I don’t care,” he says. Typical. Kids are so stupid.

It was a perfect day. The temp was about 80, clear skies, with an occasional breeze that would stir up some of the cooler air from down below, and make the trees sing. There’s nothing like the sounds of waves crashing, and the wind blowing through tall pines.

The first part of the trail was uphill for the first mile or so. Needless to say, we made several stops along the way until the trail leveled off. We hiked along for what seemed like more than 4 miles and then we started wondering if we passed it. It was becoming increasingly difficult to follow the trail and we noticed that we were the only ones around.

Just then, this ginormous mountain lion jumped out from behind a rock!

Ok. Maybe not. Just making sure you didn’t fall asleep.

But we kept going and eventually found it. I would’ve taken a picture of it, but it doesn’t really look like anything resembling it’s name. It’s just a outcropping of rock that you can climb out on and take in a nice view of the valley below. The view was pretty good and the weather was so nice that I could’ve stayed up there all day. Unfortunately, the jerky and water were low by then, and with no lions to hunt, we didn’t stay long.

Coming back was easy as it was mostly level or downhill and we tried several times to catch lizards along the way. No luck. They’re just too damn quick. Near the end, I was wondering if I’d have to put him on my back and carry him out as he said his legs were tiring. But he made it all the way back to the car. That’s my boy!

O.K. Get out your notepads ’cause there might be a quiz afterwards.

Here are three different kinds of rattlesnakes just chillin’.

A baby Great Horned Owl.

A young Barn Owl.

An adult Great Horned Owl. I think this is the guy that said it only took three licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.

The Larch.

The road home.

please don’t make us take a quiz, I’m not good at memorization.

sounds like a fun day but tiring, that’s alot of mileage on small feet.

and when you said a mountain lion jumped out I got scared. see, I was awake and paying attention.

thanks for the photos, especially of the owls. I think that is the same owl on the tootsie roll commercial. they must live a longgg time.

as a side note, how do you get the smiley faces to show up?

Teri – Drop the “rh” and the left parenthesis. I meant just the right hand parenthesis.
